SILLUSTANI FUNERAL TOMBS |Pre Inca & lnca cemetery
This amazing
archaeological complex is situated on high plateau at 3,900 meters above sea
level, about 30 kilometers north of Puno city, its name is Sillustani, one of the largest necropolis in the world. Surrounded by a landscape
of stunning beauty that seems to be summed up in the serene waters of the Umayo
lagoon.
The archaeological complex stands out for its gigantic "chullpas" (species of stone towers), built by Collas and Incas
to bury their dead. They are like chess towers resisting the passage of time.
The serene and desolate beauty of the Andes envelops these funeral moles. Its
architects, true masters in the art of erecting stone colossi, chose a
spectacular landscape for their greatest work a peak in front of the Umayo
lagoon. The tombs
are strange mausoleums of undecipherable age, although it is presumed that they
were built in the 10th century. Tombs of noble Collas, eternal abode of the Sons of the Sun, who when
dominating these lands, would add architectural features similar to those of
the Temple of the
Sun or Coricancha, in Cusco, and the
fortress of Ollantaytambo, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
2:00 Pm We pick you up from your
hotel in Puno to head the Archaeological complex, once we
get there we hike approximately 30 min to reach the place and observe the
different funerary towers, (chullpas) that seem to have taken the high-Andean plateau by
storm. They are about 90 towers scattered in an area of 150 hectares, many of
them exceed 12 meters high and have a larger diameter at the top than at the base
we can clearly see a challenge to the laws of gravity and balance a detail that
makes them unique in the continent.
If the time permit after we visit this magical place, we can stop along the way
to know the traditional houses of the inhabitants of this part of the Andes
very beautiful houses built in stone we enter to one of them to meet the local
people and interact with them exchanging experiences and learning a little bit
about the life in the Andes.
