Witness the Raw Power of the Andes: 2 Day Active Volcano Expedition Sabancaya

Feel the pulse of the Andes. The 2 Day Sabancaya Volcano Expedition is not just a high altitude trek; it is a front row seat to the raw power of the earth. While most travelers crowd the standard routes, this off-the-beaten-path journey takes you into the heart of the volcanic cordillera.

Trek to our exclusive high-altitude camp at 5,200 meters and watch safely as Sabancaya exhales massive ash plumes against the Andean sky. This is an authentic, rugged adventure designed for those who want to leave the tourist traps behind and witness a live, erupting giant in absolute solitude.

Since Sabancaya is currently in an active eruptive state (Orange Alert), we market this as a high-altitude expedition to the safe approach/base camp. Promising the actual 5,976m crater rim is not only illegal right now, but a major liability.

The true selling point here is the exclusivity of camping at 5,200m to safely witness a live, erupting volcano, an experience far more unique than a standard summit!

Itinerary

DAY 1:

Leaving Civilization Behind & The High-Altitude Approach

The Journey Begins: From Arequipa to the Colca Route

Your expedition starts seamlessly with a direct, early-morning pickup from your hotel in Arequipa. As the city sleeps, our specialized 4×4 vehicles head north, tracing the famous route towards the Colca Canyon.

We make a strategic stop at the Patapampa Pass, the “Viewpoint of the Volcanoes.” At over 4,900 meters, the crisp, thin air fills your lungs as you take in sweeping, panoramic views of the Ampato, Sabancaya, and Hualca Hualca cordillera. The scale of the Andes becomes vividly real.

2 Day Sabancaya volcano Expedition

Into the Untamed: Off-Roading to the Sallalli Sector

While standard tours continue on the paved road to Colca, we veer off into the wild. We leave civilization behind, navigating rugged dirt tracks and vast, empty altiplano plains toward the remote Sallalli sector.

Our customized 4x4s push as high as the mountain allows, usually dropping us at a staggering 4,900 meters. Here, surrounded by absolute silence and grazing vicuñas, we fuel up with a specialized mountain lunch to prepare for the physical work ahead.

The Trek to the Ampato-Sabancaya Base Camp

With our team of porters handling the heavy expedition equipment, you begin your ascent carrying only your daypack. You will navigate ancient volcanic scree and sandy trails as the landscape transforms into a lunar desert.

After a steady, challenging hike, you reach our exclusive Base Camp at 5,200 meters. Nestled on a remote, high-altitude plateau shared by the towering Ampato volcano and the active Sabancaya, this is your home for the night.

Nightfall at 5,200m: A Sky Full of Stars

Rest, hydrate, and watch the fading sun paint the smoking crater of Sabancaya in shades of fiery orange.

As night falls, the temperature plummets, often reaching -10°C (14°F). You will enjoy a hot, freshly prepared high-mountain dinner under one of the clearest, most star-filled skies on earth before retreating to your premium expedition sleeping bag.

2 Day Sabancaya volcano Expedition

An Andean Start: Into the Freezing Dark

True mountaineering begins long before dawn. We wake you in the freezing dark with hot coca tea and a light, energy dense breakfast served right at your tent.

Starting under the cover of night ensures we catch the most stable mountain conditions and the clearest skies for what lies ahead.

2 Day Sabancaya volcano Expedition

The Ascent: Conquering the Volcanic Scree

Headlamps on. Guided by the stars and your certified mountain guide, you begin the demanding push up the volcano’s flank.

The terrain is non-technical but physically punishing. You will rely on your grit and pacing to navigate the loose volcanic ash, rocky scree, and seasonal ice, climbing ever closer to the active zone.

The Ultimate Reward: Witnessing Sabancaya Erupt

As the first light of dawn breaks over the Andes, you reach the ultimate vantage point a safe-zone ridge high on the historical summit route.

Stand in absolute awe as Sabancaya violently exhales massive columns of ash just kilometers away from you. With the glaciated peak of Ampato at your back and an erupting giant in front of you, this is a profound, earth-shaking reward that very few travelers will ever experience.

2 Day Sabancaya volcano Expedition

The Scree Surf & Return to Arequipa

What took hours of grueling effort to climb takes a fraction of the time to descend. Experience the thrill of “scree surfing” sliding rapidly down the loose volcanic sand back to our Base Camp.

Sabancaya volcano tour and colca canyon excursion

After a well deserved recovery meal, we make the final hike out to our waiting 4×4 vehicles. You will settle in for the journey back through the high plains, returning to your Arequipa hotel dusty, exhausted, and carrying the rare memory of standing face-to-face with a living volcano.

WE RECOMMEND YOU

Essential Recommendations for the 2-Day Sabancaya Volcano Expedition

Preparing for the 2 day Sabancaya hiking expedition is essential to ensure a safe, comfortable, and rewarding high-altitude adventure. Unlike traditional climbs, this is a unique opportunity to safely observe a live, erupting volcano in Peru.

👉 Proper Acclimatization is Critical: You will be sleeping at an extreme altitude of 5,200 meters (17,060 ft). We strictly require clients to spend at least 3 days at high altitude (such as in Arequipa or Cusco) prior to departure. If you need further acclimatization, we highly suggest booking an additional high-altitude activity to prepare your body. Check our Acclimatization Tours in Peru.

👉 Understand Altitude Sickness (AMS): If you are planning your first high-altitude expedition in the Andes, we strongly advise you to familiarize yourself with Altitude Sickness. Please consult the following expert resources on high-altitude medicine:

👉 Gear Up for Extreme Cold & Volcanic Terrain: Nighttime temperatures at our Sabancaya Base Camp can plummet to -10°C to -15°C (14°F to 5°F). You must wear proper mountaineering clothing, including thermal base layers, an expedition-grade insulated jacket, and windproof outer shells.

  • Pro Tip for Sabancaya: Because you will be in the vicinity of active ash eruptions, a neck gaiter (Buff) and wrap-around sunglasses or goggles are mandatory to protect your face and eyes from volcanic dust and wind.

👉 Request High-Altitude Mountain Gear in Advance: Ensure you have the right equipment for extreme conditions. Let us know in advance if you need to rent  gear from us, including -15°C rated sleeping bags, trekking poles, sturdy hiking boots, or headlamps for our pre-dawn alpine start. Check availability with our team.

👉 Inform Us of Any Medical Conditions: Trekking at over 5,000 meters requires excellent physical conditioning and mental resilience. Please inform our team of any preexisting medical conditions that may require special attention during your trek to the volcano observation camp.

👉 Travel Light for the Climb: Leave your heavy luggage in your Arequipa hotel before starting the expedition. You will only need a daypack for the ascent, as our porters will handle the heavy camping equipment. If you plan to continue your journey directly to Colca Valley or to Puno afterward, let us know so we can arrange the proper transfers.

By following these recommendations, you will be fully prepared to face the rugged beauty of the Andes and witness the raw power of the Sabancaya volcano.

Notes

Need-to-Know Info: 2 Day Sabancaya Volcano Expedition

💡 Mandatory Travel Insurance and Health Declaration All clients booking our adventure trips must have required travel insurance. For your safety and the success of the expedition, it is also mandatory that you declare any existing health conditions, whether physical or mental, to our team during the booking process.

💡 Certified Mountain Tour Guides & Safety Protocols Our Expedition Leaders are elite Andean mountain guides, officially certified by UIAGM/AGMP and Peru’s most prestigious mountaineering institutions.

Their extensive experience is crucial for this specific trek, as they strictly manage the 12km exclusion zone protocols around Sabancaya. They will customize the pacing to your fitness level while ensuring maximum safety, allowing you to witness the volcanic eruptions with complete peace of mind.

💡 Porter Services: Hike Lighter, Experience More Trekking through volcanic scree and sand at over 5,000 meters is physically demanding. We highly recommend utilizing our dedicated Porter Service. While our base team handles the heavy communal camping equipment, hiring a personal porter allows you to climb with only a light daypack.

  • Note: Following established Peruvian mountaineering regulations, each porter is authorized to carry a maximum weight of 18 kg (39.7 lbs). They will provide end-to-end assistance from the 4×4 drop-off to the high camp and back.

💡 High-Altitude Acclimatization: Essential for 5,200m Camping Proper acclimatization is not just recommended; it is critical for a safe overnight stay at our Sabancaya observation camp (5,200m / 17,060 ft).

We strongly require arriving from higher elevation locations such as Puno, Cusco, or having spent at least 3 days in Arequipa. This natural exposure helps your body adjust and minimizes the risk of altitude sickness during the expedition.

💡 The Best Time to Visit Sabancaya Knowing the optimal season will significantly improve your visibility of Sabancaya’s impressive ash plumes.

  • Dry Season (Optimal Viewing): May to November is the primary dry season in the Andes. During these months, the weather is consistently stable, offering brilliant blue skies and the best unobstructed views of the daily volcanic eruptions.

  • Rainy Season: December to April brings the Andean rainy season. While expedition conditions become much tougher with potential snow and heavy cloud cover, there are still windows of excellent weather. We continuously monitor local meteorological data to ensure safe departures.

💡 Special Dietary Requirements in the Wild Our staff take pride in preparing high-energy, delicious meals even at extreme altitudes. To guarantee the quality and safety of your food in this remote location, advance notice is mandatory.

Please notify us of all food allergies, vegetarian/vegan preferences, or dietary restrictions.

💡 Mandatory Pre-Departure Briefing The day before your Arequipa 4×4 expedition departs, you will have a comprehensive meeting with your lead guide. This is the perfect opportunity to review the itinerary, check gear and get all final details sorted before leaving civilization behind.

Faqs

Yes, your safety is our absolute priority. We strictly adhere to the exclusion zone protocols set by Peruvian geological authorities (INGEMMET) for the Orange Alert status. Our certified mountain guides navigate a specialized route to a safe, high-altitude observation plateau (5,200m) shared with the Ampato volcano. We remain at a secure distance to observe the ash plumes without exposing our groups to volcanic hazards.

No. Because Sabancaya is in an active eruptive state, summiting the 5,976m crater rim is currently illegal, highly toxic, and extremely dangerous. This tour is designed as an exclusive observation expedition. The ultimate reward is camping at 5,200m and safely witnessing the raw power of a live volcano erupting from a strategic, safe-zone vantage point.

You do not need technical ice-climbing experience, as the terrain consists mostly of volcanic scree, sand, and rock. However, the physical difficulty is strenuous. You will be trekking and sleeping at extreme altitudes (above 5,000m / 16,400ft) with low oxygen levels. You must have an excellent level of cardiovascular fitness, mental resilience, and prior hiking experience to enjoy this expedition.

Nighttime temperatures at our high-altitude volcanic plateau are freezing, typically plummeting to between -10°C and -15°C (14°F to 5°F), exacerbated by high-mountain winds. A 4-season tent and an extreme-weather sleeping bag rated for at least -15°C are absolutely mandatory to safely survive and sleep in these conditions.

Proper acclimatization is critical for this expedition. We strictly require all climbers to spend a minimum of 3 full days at high altitude (such as in Arequipa, Cusco, Puno, or Lake Titicaca) immediately prior to departure. Attempting to sleep at 5,200m without acclimatization will likely result in severe Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Every expedition is led by a certified mountain guide carrying comprehensive first-aid kits, medical oxygen, communication radios. Because our customized 4×4 vehicles drop us off at 4,900m, we have a rapid evacuation route. In the event of severe altitude sickness, our team is trained to initiate an immediate and swift descent.

No. Our dedicated expedition team handle all communal gear, including the 4-season tents, dining setup, and food. You are only required to carry a 30-40L daypack containing your personal water (5 liters), extra clothing layers, and daily snacks. If you prefer to hike completely unburdened, you can hire a Personal Porter to carry your daypack and sleeping bag.

Absolutely. We understand that traveling internationally with bulky expedition gear is difficult. We offer high-quality mountain equipment rentals directly from our Arequipa office, including -15°C rated sleeping bags, trekking poles, heavy down jackets, and insulated gloves. Please request these items at the time of booking to guarantee availability.

No. This is a highly remote, off-the-beaten-path wild camping experience in the untamed Andes. There are no constructed bathrooms, running water, or electricity. We practice strict Leave No Trace principles. Our team will set up a designated area for privacy, and all waste is managed according to ecological mountain standards.

The optimal window for this expedition is during the Andean dry season, from May through November. During these months, precipitation is rare, offering brilliant blue skies, stable weather, and the clearest, most unobstructed views of Sabancaya’s daily volcanic ash columns. While we operate during the rainy season (December to April), heavy clouds and snow can obscure visibility and make the terrain much more difficult.
