El Misti is the most popular symbol of Arequipeans, to climb this volcano it is not required to have experience since it is not a technical mountain, but it is necessary a have good physical condition and an adequate acclimatization to the height.

Itinerary

Day 1
AREQUIPA – BEGINNING OF NATIONAL RESERVE - BASE CAMP (4625)

This excursion is considered a tough ascent since we climb through sandy, ashy, rocky trail. We suggest to be in good physical condition and acclimatized to the altitude.

8:00 am our 4x4 vehicle picks you up from your hotel and 1:30 hrs. Later we arrive at beginning of the national reserve (3415msnm). From there it begins our ascent to the volcano it will takes about 6 hrs. approx. to reach the first base camp, named (Pyramids) on the way up we follow a trail over some crests also we cross into some cracks caused by the erosion of the water and the thawing of the snow, the trail is covered by endemic vegetation, species such as ichu, tola, chinchicoma, tarhui, among others, besides being able to see some wild animals such as, foxes, mountain eagles, vizcachas, and probably wild south American camelids since we will be inside of a National Reserve, during the ascend we will feel how the landscape changes and how the temperature goes down as the altitude increases, we do stops to rehydrate ourselves and also to enjoy some snacks,  get the most incredible landscape from natural viewpoints.

About 6 hours later we enter to Pyramids base camp situated at 4625meters high. We take a good break and depending in our progress and how everybody feel the tour guide is going to decide if we stay in this first base camp or we continue to the second one named Eagles Nest situate at 4800 meters. (We usually stay at the first base camp)

In the afternoon our tour guide is going to cook for the group (he will prepare high-calorie foods so that our body regains energy for the next day climb). Later on enjoy the hot meal, while the tour guide talk about the program for the next day, you should try to sleep early because usually the next day we start early too. (The departure time will be decide depending and different circumstances like – how every integrant is feeling, clime conditions, how much snow el Misti presents among others).
do not forget before you enter inside the tent to have look of the sky the milky way is amazing, observe a lot off constellations and have a good night…! Let’s continue the adventure the next day.

(Usually the temperature all year long is ok during the day, but in autumn and winter as soon as the sun sets the temperature comes down dramatically, stay warm).

Base Camp: 4625 meters / 15.262 feet
Climbing Distance: 4.2 km – 2,62 miles

Day 2
BASE CAMP (4625m) – MISTI SUMMIT (5825m)

Very early in the morning we have a light breakfast including coca tea (it will help you very well if you present altitude symptoms) then we start our 6.5 or 7 hrs. toward the summit, keep in mind the only way to do this, is to follow the mountain climbers pace, later on as soon as the sun rise we will appreciate the conical shadow of the Misti projected over city like a perfect triangle, the daylight will reveal us the beautiful scenery around us, a barren desert landscape reaches as far as the eye could see.

This climb will take us through several step and a zig zag trail till the summit we will have the most amazing viewpoint from where everybody see a beautiful portion of the Andes mountain range, Arequipa lakes and its water dams, but the most incredible thing you can experience in life will be to reach the summit, observe the spectacular crater and hike on its mayor lips. When you get there, feel free to release all your emotions, rest I take many pictures, and just when you feel ready it will be time to go back to the base camp, it takes about 1.5 hours, this time we use a diferent trail to descent, slide down, the trail is mostly cover with sand and ash, it allows you to stop easily when it is necessary, once we get the base camp, take another rest, eat something and then pack up your stuff,  we continue descending for a couple more hours to return where our 4wd is waiting for us, later on we will be back in Arequipa city at approximately 4:00 pm or 5:00 pm in the afternoon. End of the excursion to El Misti.
