2 Days CLIMBING
UBINAS VOLCANO
Visit Salinas Lagoon &
Vicuña National Reserve
Overview
A small, 1.4-km-wide caldera cuts
the top of Ubinas, Perú's most active volcano, giving it a truncated
appearance. It is the northernmost of three young volcanoes located along a
regional structural lineament about 50 km behind the main volcanic front. The
steep-walled, 150-m-deep summit caldera contains an ash cone with a 500-m-wide
funnel-shaped vent that is 200 m deep. Debris-avalanche deposits from the
collapse of the SE flank about 3,700 years ago extend 10 km from the volcano.
Widespread Plinian pumice-fall deposits include one of Holocene age about 1,000
years ago. Holocene lava flows are visible on the flanks, but historical
activity, documented since the 16th century, has consisted of intermittent
minor-to-moderate explosive eruptions.
The scenic beauty of the Ubinas and Pichu pichu volcanos dominate the landscape, where human
activities stand out, be it grazing or extractive activities, however the
wildlife, especially the thousands of flamingos, give it an unusual
color and a lot of beauty.
Salinas Lagoon is
a shallow water salt flat, which is located in southern Peru, in Arequipa region
within the limits of the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve. It is located in a depression that forms the final
part of an endorheic basin, it has a maximum extension of about 6,182 hectares,
although its area decreases during the dry season,
until it is reduced to a crust of salt. It rises to a height of 4,300 m above sea level. The
salt flat is surrounded by wetlands that are fed by rainwater and melt water.

Itinerary
FIRST DAY
AREQUIPA |
CHIGUATA TOWN | Salinas Reserve & Lagoon | UBINAS Base Camp
8:30 am we pick
you up from your hotel, bus station or airport depending on your choice then we
take a journey for about 2 ½ hours to get to Salinas National Reserve a protected area an ideal point to visit.
On the way to the Salinas lagoon we cross a traditional village named Chiguata, to see a lot of pre-Inca terraces, stone houses,
the view of the conical shape of the Misti volcano and its geological faults is
simply impressive, once we reach (3800m /12540 ft - limit of the agriculture) we
enter into an special area known as
Puna, to find the most special forest known as Queñuales the only
one in the world growing in a very high environments, use as a source of fuel
for the native people living on the highlands.
Later
on we arrive at Salinas lagoon, so we have to prepare ourselves to start
our hike at (4300m/14190 ft) this first part consist of hiking around the
laggon to find and observe a wonderful wildlife such as flamingos, vicuñas,
Vizcachas (rabbit of the
Andes) and eventually some Andean foxes, deer and Guanacos too.
The path
is cover with sand and volcanic ash so as far as possible we hike inside of the
lagoon in a section covered with borax, (mineral that remains on the
surface when the lagoon begins to evaporate) it gives the best chances
to see flamingos and
other bird species in the water.
At the end of this hike, we set up our table somewhere by the lagoon to
enjoy our box lunch in this unforgettable landscape.
Once
everybody finish we will be ready to continue, it takes around 1:00 hour so we keep
going through this beautiful scenery by car, once we get at the mountain
foothill there is Piscoquocha another beautiful small lagoon very close to our
base camp, we set up our tents to take a rest, it is free time you can take a
walk around but later on, we get a hot meal enjoying the sunset looking at the
Salinas lagoon in the distance.
After that the tour
guide will talk about the program for the next day.
(do not forget before you enter inside the tent to
have look of the sky the milky way is amazing, observe a lot off constellations
and have a good night…!)
(Usually the temperature all year long is ok during the day, but in fall
and winter as soon as the sun goes the temperature comes down dramatically,
stay warm).

SECOND DAY
UBINAS SUMMIT
/ CRATER - BASE CAMP - AREQUIPA city
5:00 am breakfast will be served afterwards we get on our
vehicle towards the north side of the mountain to the beginning of our climb,
we have to reach (4920m.
/16236 ft.) From here it will
takes about 3 hours to get the summit. This climb could looks easy for someone
who is acclimated but do not trust yourself since we will be hiking over 5000
meters on a volcanic terrain which will present us certain obstacles along the
way, so let our Mountain tour guide sets the best rhythm to have an adequate
progress it is going to be a zig zag trail, sandy and ashy but if there is snow
we probably have to use crampons and ice axe specially close to the top, we
will let you know since it depends on the season (snowy season mid-December to April).
Once you reach the
main lips of the volcano (our summit) we
get an extraordinary view of everything around you and just depending on
volcanologist reports we could descend to reach the edge of the small crater,
since it offers a very impressive view. The active crater is said to be 1.6 km (1 mile) wide with vertical walls and
150-200 meters (500-650
feet) deep. But better to do it when the volcano is in a calm state.
It will take approximately 1 hour to get in and out. (Conditions change often since this is an
active volcano)
From the main lips of
the volcano we descent for about 1 hour untill where the car is waiting for us,
afterwards we return to base camp to have something to eat pack up everything
and return to the city, 3 hours later we will be arriving to your hotel around 6:00
pm.
