A Day Tour
CLIMBING UBINAS VOLCANO
(new version)
Overview
Ubinas volcano is part of a group of seven volcanoes in southern Peru
located within a volcanic zone that extends from southern Peru to northern
Chile, Ubinas is the most active stratovolcano in the Central Volcanic Zone of
the Andes situated within the "Ring of Fire," a region encompassing
the edges of the Pacific Ocean that is renowned for its volcanic activity and
seismic events.
The upper portion of the volcano is made from lava flows from the Pleistocene.
The depression (caldera) at the summit contains a cone of volcanic ash sporting
a vent shaped like a funnel.
Ubinas has been considered as a potential place for geothermal energy
production, Sulfur deposits in its crater were considered among the most
important in Peru and were mined in the 19th century.
The ancient local inhabitants from valleys nearby believed that Ubinas was
infested with demons and souls of people who had committed mortal sins

ITINERARY
AREQUIPA - VICUÑA NATIONAL RESERVE – UBINAS SUMMIT
We start this climbing experience picking you up from your hotel at 5:00 am to head southeast of
Arequipa city.
To get to our destination we have to follow an abandoned dirt road that takes
us in a serpentine way crossing a beautiful pre Inca valley where different cultures
have settled since ancient times, once we reach (3800 meters) we will be over the
tree line and into a special environment of the Andes where a huge territory
was declared as a very important National reserve to protect a unique flora and
fauna. There, it will be our place to enjoy an Andean Peruvian breakfast.
Let us set up everything close to the most beautiful lagoon named (Salinas and aguada blanca). Enjoy this moment eating
and observing the sun rise behind Ubinas Volcano besides this marvelous
mountain landscape cover with special grass and very probably some groups of South
American camelids walking in search of food in the distance, depending on the season
we have a great chance to observe a great variety of birds specially flamingos.
Usually from (January to July).
Later on, we continue for about 50 more minutes to get the skirts of Ubinas
volcano, (4920m. /16236 ft.) there, We take time to
prepare ourselves and pack up everything we need.
It will takes about 3 - 4 hours to get the summit of Ubinas volcano, this climb could looks
easy don't rush, take it easy since we will be Climbing over 5000 meters on a volcanic terrain which will present us certain obstacles along the
way, so let our Mountain tour guide sets the best rhythm to have an adequate heart
rate progress and progress effectively.
(Remember; it is preferable to have a slow
and regular rhythm than a fast and choppy one.)
We follow a zig zag trail cover with sand, ash and rocks if there is
snow we probably have to use crampons and ice axe especially close to the top, we
will let you know since it depends on the season.
(Snowy season mid-December to April).
Once you have reached the main lips of the volcano (our summit) we get the most extraordinary view of everything around and just
depending on volcanologist reports we could descend to get the edge of the
small crater, since it offers a very impressive view. The active crater is said
to be 1.6 km (1 mile) wide with vertical walls
and 150-200 meters (500-650 feet) deep. But better to
do it when the volcano is in a calm state. It will take a bit more than 1 hour
to get in and out.
(Conditions
change often since this is an active volcano)
From the main lips of the volcano we descent for about 1 hour until where
the car is waiting for us, afterwards we go back to Arequipa city, if time
permits we do some stops at Salinas lagoon to observe more fauna that did not
show up in the morning. 2.5 hours later we will be arriving to your hotel.
