MIXED TOUR - UROS by KAYAK + VISIT
  AMANTANI and TAQUILE ISLANDS
2 Days

Lake Titicaca (Quechua = Titiqaqa Qucha) is a large, deep lake in the Andes on the border of Bolivia and Peru, known as the highest navigable lake in the world and the largest lake in South America.

Other cultures lived on Lake Titicaca prior to the arrival of the Incas, according to legend, the Uru people originated in the Amazon, migrated to the area of Lake Titicaca in the pre-Columbian era, where they were oppressed by the local population and were unable to secure land of their own. They built the reed islands, which could be moved into deep water or to different parts of the lake, as necessary, for greater safety from their hostile neighbors on land.

On the other hand Taquile is a hilly island located 45 km (28 mi) east of Puno. Culture is very much alive, which can be seen in the traditional clothes everyone wears. Taquileans run their society based on community collectivism and on the Inca moral code Ama Sua, Ama Llulla, Ama Qhilla, (do not steal, do not lie, do not be lazy).

This tour begins at 6:30 am and then we transfer you to the Estevez island where we will begin this wonderful adventure towards the Uros Islands, but before we start we get all the safety instructions as well as the professional kayak gear and after that we start paddling the kayaks towards the islands for approximately 1 hour and For support we will be accompanied by a professional instructor and a motorized boat, during the journey we will have an incredible experience as we will be paddling and sailing on the highest lake in the world, with an average altitude of 3812 m. n. m. From our kayak we will appreciate the immense beauty that Lake Titicaca offers us, an amazing landscape surrounded by hills and mountains typical of the highlands in the central Andes. The floating islands of the Uros are located in the bay of Puno, finally once we reach the island of the Uros we will learn a bit about the lifestyle that is still preserved in the place, we have to take a journey to the past to understand the reality that still keeps alive, millenary activities, fundamental for the survival of the population of the place, dedicating themselves to fish and hunting birds also depending completely on the Totora (Aquatic Plant of the Lake) a Plant with which they build their islands, houses, rafts and that also serves as food and fuel. On the island live very friendly people descendants of Los Uros who were one of the oldest ethnic groups that inhabited the highlands, they will gladly show us how they have built their islands made with large blocks of the roots of the Totora that makes them float due to the Porosity of the blocks aided by the gases produced by its decomposition. People have a very hard job joining the blocks and also they have to put a layers of Totora, something that must be replaced every 20 days. In this island we will have time to explore and also buy some souvenirs from this special people after that we continue with the journey to Amantani island (2 ½ hours more) and arrive at the average noon where we will be warmly welcomed by local families. Accompanied by them we hike for about 30 min uphill to the local houses, where we have a delicious typical Andean lunch. Then we will settle in the family home and free time to rest because after that we meet our tour guide again to go for a nice hike (about 1 hour) to the top of the island to visit the Inca ceremonial temples Pachamama and Pachatata. After that we will enjoy the beautiful views of the lake and its splendor, and of course one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Finally we return to have dinner at the local houses, overnight families organized a welcome party (optional) where we can dance and wear the local dress all accompanied by local musicians.

Knitting is exclusively performed by males, beginning in early boyhood. Women spin wool and use vegetables and minerals to dye the wool to be used by the community. Taquile is narrow and long, it was used as a prison during the Spanish Colony In 1970, it became property of the Taquile people, who have inhabited the island since then.
