We have designed this 2 day expedition to connect you with the mountain’s untamed spirit, far from the typical tourist crowds. Your journey to this 6,075-meter giant begins here.
Chachani” means “skirt” in Quechua, a name that hints at its flowing, majestic lines. This massive volcano isn’t just one peak; it’s a trinity of ancient giants: Chachani (6,075m), Angel (5,825m), and Fatima (5,900m). Your path will tread on a landscape shaped by time and extreme Andean sequences. While global warming has claimed its last glacial remnants, the mountain’s scarcer snowpack doesn’t diminish its power, it reveals a raw, high altitude desert beauty unique to this part of Peru’s western slope.
It is important to knowt that Chachani is one of the world’s most accessible 6,000-meter peaks.
Does that make it easy? No. It makes it perfect for adventure seekers new to mountaineering. The true challenge is the altitude, a powerful force that demands respect and proper acclimatization. Our expedition is designed to guide you through this process.
At certain times of the year, your reward for overcoming the thin air is a breathtaking vista that stretches all the way to the Peruvian coast, a sight few travelers ever behold.
Summit Chachani with the confidence of having Arequipa’s top mountain experts by your side. We specialize in creating custom acclimatization plans and providing expert logistical support, ensuring your non-technical ascent is both successful and safe.

We will navigate authentic volcanic terrain, carefully picking our way through a rugged 20-minute boulder field. Your certified mountain guide will set a deliberate, steady pace to ensure proper altitude acclimatization during this 1.5 to 2-hour ascent.

The Start Under the Stars
Our summit push begins in the profound silence of the early morning, typically around 1:00 AM, depending on optimal weather conditions. We start with a warming cup of traditional Andean coca tea and a light breakfast to awaken the body.
Leaving the heavy expedition gear secured at Base Camp, you will travel light, carrying only a daypack with your essentials for the demanding 6 to 6.5 hourS ascent to the top of Chachani Volcano.

Navigating the High-Altitude Switchbacks
The climb requires mental resilience as we navigate a continuous zig-zag path up the rugged volcanic slopes. Your expert mountain guide will manage the pace meticulously, ensuring steady progress through the thinning air.
We make strategic, brief stops to rest and hydrate until we reach the first prominent ridge at 5,700 meters (18,700 ft). Here, as dawn begins to break over the Andes, we take a vital 15-minute break to refuel and prepare for the sections ahead.
Traversing the Extinct Chachani Crater
Continuing from the ridge, we cross a high-altitude traverse that leads us to other face of the mountain. As we approach the dramatic lips of Chachani’s extinct crater, the path becomes noticeably steeper.
After carefully navigating one final, narrow ridge, we step right into the heart of the crater. From this otherworldly landscape, there are only a thrilling 15-minutes to reach our ultimate goal.

While reaching 6,075m (19,931 ft) is a serious physical challenge, the Chachani climb is considered non-technical. This means you do not need to do any vertical rock climbing or use ropes. The main difficulty lies in the extreme altitude, the steep volcanic terrain, and the physical endurance required for the early morning summit push. Excellent physical fitness and strong determination are essential.
No prior technical mountaineering experience is required. Chachani is widely known as one of the most accessible 6000-meter peaks in the world. If you are an active hiker with good stamina and have properly acclimatized to the altitude, you can successfully reach the summit under the guidance of our certified mountain experts.
Proper acclimatization is the key to a successful summit. We strongly recommend spending at least 3 to 4 days at high altitude (above 3,000m) before attempting Chachani. Staying in Arequipa (2,335m) for a few days, combined with a previous hike in the Colca Canyon or climbing the Misti Volcano, is the perfect way to prepare your body for the thin air.
The best climbing season is during the Andean dry season, from April to November. During these months, the skies are generally clear, offering breathtaking views, and precipitation is minimal. However, because it is a high-altitude environment, mountain weather can be unpredictable year-round, and you may still encounter snowy sections near the summit.
Temperatures on the mountain drop drastically after sunset. At Base Camp and during the alpine start (2:00 AM), temperatures can easily plunge to -10°C to -15°C (14°F to 5°F). You will absolutely need heavy thermal layers, a high-quality down jacket, insulated mountain boots, warm gloves, and a reliable headlamp to navigate the dark, freezing hours before dawn.
You are responsible for carrying your personal items, sleeping bag, and your share of the daily water. The hike from the 4WD drop-off to Base Camp is relatively short (1.5 to 2 hours), but the altitude makes heavy packs feel much heavier. If you prefer not to carry your gear, we offer an optional porter service—just let us know in advance!
Although Chachani lost its permanent glaciers in 2008, the upper sections and the crater traverse frequently hold packed snow and ice. To ensure your absolute safety, our guides always carry crampons and ice axes. If the terrain requires it, we will provide you with this technical gear and instruct you on how to use it for the final push to the summit cross.
Safety is our absolute priority. Our certified mountain guides are trained in wilderness first aid and closely monitor your condition throughout the trek. If you show severe signs of altitude sickness, the guide will immediately initiate a descent. The mountain will always be there, and we never compromise your health.
Hydration is critical for acclimatization. You should bring at least 4.5 to 5 liters of water in total. You will need about 3 liters for your personal hydration during the hikes, plus an additional 1.5 liters of water that you must hand over to the guide at Base Camp for cooking your hot dinner and breakfast.
Standing by the metal cross at 6,075 meters is an unforgettable reward. On a clear day, you will enjoy a stunning 360-degree panorama of the Andean volcanic spine, including Mount Misti, Pichu Pichu, Coropuna, and the spectacular sight of the active Sabancaya volcano releasing plumes of ash into the sky.
It depends on your goals and preferred terrain. Mount Misti (5,825m) is the iconic cone overlooking Arequipa; however, its ascent involves climbing through steep, loose volcanic ash (scree), which makes every step physically draining. Chachani is significantly higher (6,075m), meaning the altitude is tougher on your lungs, but the terrain is generally firmer, consisting of solid volcanic rock and snow patches. Choose Misti for the classic Arequipa icon, or Chachani to achieve the massive milestone of conquering a 6000m+ peak.
If you are looking for an uncrowded, authentic wilderness experience, Chachani is the better choice. Because Misti is closer to the city, it attracts a higher volume of climbers. Chachani requires a rugged 3-hour 4WD off-road journey just to reach the trailhead, which naturally filters out casual tourists. On Chachani, you will experience the profound, isolated silence of the high Andes.
Starting the climb at 2:00 AM is both mentally and physically demanding. You will be stepping out of your tent into freezing temperatures, relying entirely on the beam of your headlamp to illuminate the rocky path ahead. Wrapped in your heavy down jacket, the only sounds you will hear are the crunch of your boots on the frozen ground and your own breathing. It is a raw, deeply meditative experience that tests your willpower before rewarding you with a breathtaking sunrise over the volcanic landscape.
