We designed The CLIMBING UBINAS VOLCANO (NEW VERSION) for the traveler who doesn’t just want to see Peru, but wants to feel it. Standing at the crater of Ubinas offers a visceral connection to the Earth’s energy that you cannot find on standard treks.
Stand on the Edge of the Ring of Fire
Escape the ordinary and step into the raw power of the Andes. Ubinas is not just a mountain; it is the most active stratovolcano in Peru. Located in the heart of the Central Volcanic Zone, this is your chance to physically touch the famous “Ring of Fire.”
This is not a standard tour. It is a journey into a geological giant that connects the landscapes of Southern Peru to Northern Chile.
The terrain here tells a violent and beautiful history. As you ascend, you will traverse ancient lava flows dating back to the Pleistocene era.
The summit offers a view unlike any other: a massive caldera depression housing a volcanic ash cone with a funnel-shaped vent. This is nature in its most primal form.
Where History Meets Mystery
For centuries, Ubinas has commanded fear and respect. In the 19th century, brave miners extracted some of Peru’s most significant sulfur deposits directly from the crater.
But the locals knew a different side of the mountain. Ancient inhabitants of the nearby valleys believed the Ubinas was infested with demons and the tormented souls of those who committed mortal sins. Today, the only spirits you’ll find are those of adventure.
Check what our clients say about their experiences
Expect a true adventure expedition, distinct from high-end comfortable trips. Our climb navigates the challenging, remote Ubinas scenery. The ultimate payoff is the earned feeling of achievement, complemented by the profound, unfiltered beauty of the Andean wilderness.
Your adventure begins before sunrise.
We pick you up from your hotel at 5:00 a.m., heading southeast from Arequipa toward the remote highlands that surround Ubinas Volcano. This early start ensures ideal mountain conditions and unforgettable morning light across the Andes.
The journey follows an abandoned dirt road deep into pre-Inca territory.
As we ascend through a serpentine valley once inhabited by ancient cultures, the landscape transforms dramatically. Reaching 3,800 m, we cross the tree line and enter the vast ecosystem of the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve, a protected area known for its unique flora and fauna.
Breakfast with one of the most remarkable views in southern Peru.
We set up an Andean-style breakfast beside the stunning Salinas Lagoon, a sanctuary framed by grasslands, volcanic peaks, and the silhouette of Ubinas illuminated by the rising sun. Depending on the season, you may observe vicuñas, alpacas, or herds of wild camelids roaming in the distance. From January to July, flamingos are commonly seen feeding along the shimmering lagoon.
The approach to Ubinas begins after breakfast.
We continue driving for approximately 50 minutes to the base of the volcano Here, we take time to gear up, hydrate, and receive final instructions before beginning the ascent.
A demanding but rewarding climb to the summit.
The ascent typically takes 2.5 to 3 hours, following a zig-zag trail of volcanic sand, ash, and rock. Although the climb may appear moderate, the altitude above 5,000 m makes a controlled rhythm essential. Your mountain guide sets the pace to ensure safe and efficient progress.
During snowy months (mid-December to April), crampons and an ice axe may be required for the upper section. Your guide will inform you in advance according to seasonal conditions.
Reaching the summit: the crater and its otherworldly views.
Upon arriving at the volcano’s upper rim—our main summit point—you are rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of the Andean altiplano and neighboring peaks. Depending on official volcanological reports, and only if conditions are completely safe, we may descend into the larger crater rim to visit the edge of the active inner crater, a 1.6 km wide amphitheater with nearly vertical walls dropping 150–200 m.
This descent adds roughly one additional hour, and is only undertaken when the volcano is in a stable, low-activity state.
The mountain changes constantly.
Because Ubinas is an active stratovolcano, weather and geological conditions evolve frequently. Your guide will make real-time decisions to ensure safety at all times.
Descent and return to Arequipa.
From the summit rim, we descend for about 1 hour to reach the vehicle. If time and wildlife activity allow, we make strategic stops at Salinas Lagoon to spot additional fauna that may not have appeared in the morning.
After a 2.5-hour drive, we arrive back at your hotel in Arequipa.
