MOUNTAIN BIKING From SALINAS LAGOON & VICUÑA NATIONAL RESERVE
The scenic beauty of the Pichu Pichu and Ubinas volcanoes dominate the landscape, here human activities stand out, be it grazing or extractive activities, however the wildlife, especially the thousands of flamingos, give it an unusual color and a lot of beauty.
The Salinas Lagoon is a shallow water salt flat, which is located in southern Peru, Arequipa Region within the limits of the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve. It is located in a depression that forms the final part of an endorheic basin, it has a maximum extension of about 6,182 hectares, although its area decreases during the dry season, until it is reduced to a crust of salt. It rises to a height of 4,300 m above sea level. The salt flat is surrounded by wetlands that are fed by rainwater and melt water.

7:00 am to 7: 30am we pick you up from the hotel then we take a journey for about 2 ½ hours to Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve and an ideal point to visit if you also have interest in bird watching a large percentage of birds are usually migratory.
On the way to the Salinas lagoon we cross a traditional village named Chiguata which is surrounded by pre-Inca terraces beautiful farmers stone houses, eucalyptus forest, ravines and the view of the lord Misti volcano is simply impressive, once we reach (3800m the tree line) we enter into an special area known as Puna, where an special native tree lives its name is Queñua and it is consider unique due to is the only one in the world growing nearly almost till 5000 meter.
Later on 25 minutes after we cross a very narrow tunnel we arrive to Salinas lagoon. Throughout the year the visitors find wonderful wildlife such as vicuñas, Vizcachas (rabbit of the Andes) luckily Andean foxes, deer and Guanacos too.
Salinas Lagoon is the only place in the world that houses three species of Flamingos.
Around 10:00 am we arrive at the starting point for this adventure, while we take the bicycles out of the car and prepare everything for you, there is time for you to stretch your legs, use an Inca toilet and of course to take a 10 minutes hike to reach the highest lookout point to get the best panoramic view of the entire lagoon.To have a good performance before start biking the tour guide is going to explain everything about safety and the operation of the bicycle system, etc
On the first part of this tour we ride our bicycles on the edge of the lagoon, on a flat surface with a path of sand and volcanic ash and also as far as possible inside the lagoon in a section covered with borax, (mineral that remains on the surface when the lagoon begins to evaporate) and with some chances to see flamingos.
We stop at different points to take pictures and enjoy the beauty of the highlands and while we are cycling we have the best view of one of the most active volcanoes in Peru, our goal is to reach the place where flamingos are feeding themselves and definitively we have to get off of the bike to walk discreetly in silence to get the best pictures of everything that surround this magical scenery.
We will find a beautiful to have some snacks by the lagoon then we continue by car to the second part of this trip.
Later on, we descend about 1600 meters, this downhill is on a bumpy terrain with some curves, if you have a little more experience we can try a single track, entering into the mysterious forest, we definitively do some stops to drink water and of course to take photos and to let the fingers rest.
When everybody is ready we continue descending this time through beautiful communities where every day people work very hard their farmland, this landscape is just unique Pre Inca cultures transformed a lot of these hills into terraces, local people use them for agricultural purposes.
The last part of this tour is on a paved road with minimal traffic in direction to the city so you can enjoy the adrenaline in a spectacular fast downhill, the final stop by a bridge where we have a great view of Pichu Pichu mountain, then we return to the city center ending in your hotel.
